Gunmen launched co-ordinated attacks at several crowded locations across India’s financial capital on Wednesday, killing at least 101 people and holding several people hostage through the night at two luxury hotels.
Police believe that the number of terrorists could be three or four.
Raging fire and plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the central dome of the century-old heritage Taj hotel opposite the Gateway of India this morning as firemen struggled to douse them. A guest stranded in one of the rooms said two explosions shook the building.
Johnny Joseph, chief secretary for Maharashtra state in India, of which Mumbai is the capital, says the death toll could rise further.
The gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold’s restaurant, a Mumbai landmark, along with the Oberoi and Taj Mahal hotels.
The motive for the attacks was not immediately clear but Mumbai has frequently been targeted in terror attacks, often blamed on Muslim militants, including a series of blasts in July last year that killed 187 people.

This is an open leeter to the leadership of India.
The Indian government’s lack of seriousness in dealing with terrorism is the reason terrorists keep on striking in the country.
What kind of security we have to our borders? 20-25 persons barging into our teritorry and taking the entire city in their command. What was our Navy and coast guard doing?
Today they have attacked the city, they could have easily attacked the Bombay High oil rig. Imagine the human loss and financial loss to the country.
We require strong anti-terror laws to fight these kind of terror acts.Our political leadership should now stop worrying about their vote abnk and start thinking about the security of people of Inida. After 9/11 attack U.S. has been able to avoid any kind of terror attack, where as in India we are facing them every now and then because terrorist know that nothing can happen to them due to poor anti terror laws. Terrorist should be punished in such a way that next time they should not think of attacking our country.
I live in Mumbai and for Business purpose now based in a gulf country. In this part of world govt. rules are so strictly followed because people know if they found doing anything wrong they will be punished like anyhing. In my wild imaginaiton also I can’t think of going out of my room without my passport in my pocket. And the security check is done frequently on the roads of city and if you found without relative documents you will be immeditely put behind the bars.
why can’t we have such strong laws for India and not think of politicalvote bank so that the tax paying common man feels safe to move on the street of India.
Its high time our politcal leaders take some outstanding and brave decision to protect the people of India.
