as held to 0-0 draw by Lanus of Argentina

MEXICO (AP) — Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara was held to a scoreless draw by Lanus of Argentina on Tuesday, meaning its qualification for the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores will hinge on its last Group 6 match against Everton of Chile.

The Mexican side created the better of the goal scoring opportunities but failed to find a final touch. The draw moved Chivas to eight points in second place in the group, one behind Caracas and one in front of Everton.

Caracas beat Everton 1-0 earlier in the evening to secure a place in the next round, while Lanus slumped out of contention.

Chivas will need at least a draw at Everton to progress, with Caracas playing at last-place Lanus the same day.

Despite dominating possession, Chivas only created a couple of opportunities in the first half with shots from Javier Hernandez after 17 minutes and Sergio Ponce after 41.

In the second half, Chivas continued to control possession while Lanus aimed to hit on the break.

The home dominance was amplified after 54 minutes when Maximiliano Velazquez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Gonzalo Pineda and Ramon Morales wasted good opportunities to open the scoring, but Alberto Medina was the worst culprit after blowing Guadalajara’s best chance after 85 minutes.

Emir Facciolia spurned the Argentine club’s clearest sight of goal after 89 minutes.

Chivas named a second string line-up with one eye on Sunday<s derby clash with fierce rivals America in the Mexican league championship.
