India hands Mumbai attacks file to Pakistan

Phone records, captured weapons and statements by the sole surviving suspect in November’s Mumbai massacre are among the evidence India’s government handed over to Pakistan on Monday, its foreign ministry announced

India has said Islamic militants trained in Pakistan were behind the November 26 attacks on Mumbai, which left more than 160 people dead in a three-day siege of India’s financial capital.

Pakistani officials have promised to cooperate with the investigation, but have insisted that India show it the evidence supporting its case.

India delivered what it says is that evidence to Pakistani officials in New Delhi and Islamabad on Monday morning, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

Terror attacks in Mumbai – 26/11/2008 -at least 101 Dead

Gunmen launched co-ordinated attacks at several crowded locations across India’s financial capital on Wednesday, killing at least 101 people and holding several people hostage through the night at two luxury hotels.

Police believe that the number of terrorists could be three or four.

Raging fire and plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the central dome of the century-old heritage Taj hotel opposite the Gateway of India this morning as firemen struggled to douse them. A guest stranded in one of the rooms said two explosions shook the building.
Johnny Joseph, chief secretary for Maharashtra state in India, of which Mumbai is the capital, says the death toll could rise further.

 

The gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold’s restaurant, a Mumbai landmark, along with the Oberoi and Taj Mahal hotels.

 

The motive for the attacks was not immediately clear but Mumbai has frequently been targeted in terror attacks, often blamed on Muslim militants, including a series of blasts in July last year that killed 187 people.
